REDBUD ORCHARD

The Beginning

Redbud Orchard is a passion project born out of civic pride and a love for gardening. Our budding orchard is located at 5405 S. Harrison Street in the Fairfield Terrace Belmont Neighborhood in the beautiful ‘07. Our primary goal is to be good stewards of this land and the neighborhood. So if you have any questions or concerns please reach out to me!

Based on public records, a permit to demo the former home on this land was filed in 2013 and the land sat unused until I became the owner in late 2020. I acquired the lot from my participation in the Purdue Extension’s Urban Agriculture program. Upon completion of the course, students were given a certificate to obtain one lot from Allen County Community Development. The course fee was about the same price as paying for a lot outright from ACCDC. In Spring of 2021 we broke ground on Redbud Orchard.

Below are the first three items we planted along with our tentative site plans. Because there is no water access here, we plan to water all new plantings with drip irrigation buckets that were super easy to fabricate thanks to this tutorial. One of the first tasks at hand was ridding the lot of the trash and debris that had been allowed to accumulate over time. Additionally, the sidewalks were overgrown with grass by about 10” on each side. So these basic beautification items were the first things on our agenda.
